White Walkers

The White Walkers, which is another name for the Others, as known by the Wildlings (men and women who live in the forests past the Wall) are a mythological race that are mentioned in the ancient legends and stories from the times of the First Men and the Children of the Forest. These deathly creatures were believed to be the most dangerous thing on the continent of Westeros, and caused many of the deaths alongside famine. They brought chaos and war to Westeros before they were defeated in a great struggle and driven back into the frigid lands of the pinnacle points of the North, beyond the great wall of the Night’s Watch. Many people of these times believe that these devastating creatures did not exist, while others believe that they became extinct after being exiled to the northern parts of the world due to the fact that they have not been seen for thousands of years. However, rumours floating from the Wildlings that live beyond the wall state that the White Walkers have returned to Westeros, which has, in turn, sent the wildlings searching for a new place to live. They are believed to be the servants of “the great other”, an evil God of darkness, cold and death who wages an eternal war with R’hllor.
The Others are said to hold an appearance of tall, gaunt humanoids that possess chalk white skin and eyes of blue so deep that they burn like fire that it is believed if a mortal man gazes within the eyes of a White Walker, they will instantly relive the most painful memory or worst nightmare that is seated within their minds. They are usually adorned in reflective armour that shifts in colour with every step, and wield thin crystal swords that seem to give off a bluish hue. They are believed to speak in a language known only amongst themselves, which has been deemed as the language called “Skroth”, however, have more recently been said to be able to speak the Common Tongue of Westeros with voices that imitate the sound of cracking ice. The White Walkers have the ability to reincarnate the dead, which enables them to create mounts comprised of the dead carcasses of creatures ranging from stray horses to the wild bears that roam around the forests.
The White Walkers only become active during the night, and when they do wander about the lands of the forest beyond the wall, they bring an unnatural cold with them that has been described to chill a man to his very bones. Objects that come into contact by the heavy, yet majestic looking, lethal swords are said to become so frigidly cold that they shatter upon contact. Their movements have been described as being completely silent, while displaying a fluid grace that almost shocks the onlooker into a stunned sense. They exhibit a superb mastery of swordsmanship, which can be intimidating to anyone that may cross their path.
The Others possess only a few weaknesses that have been recorded in the ancient scrolls that have been stowed away within the library of the Night’s Watch. One of these weaknesses is contact with obsidian or more commonly known as dragon-glass or “frozen fire”. Weapons forged of this obsidian will be granted the ability to pierce the White Walker’s armour easily and kill them almost instantly. Another weakness is that to a metal, which has been given the common name of “dragon-steel”, that several Night’s Watchmen have found to be Valyrian steel. Magical wards of white magic placed upon the wall helps prevent the Others from crossing into the Seven Kingdoms. When a White Walker dies, they have been said to melt into a pool of extremely cold liquid.
